Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the southern Russian River Valley, family-run since 1996.
Walter Hansel planted the first 250 vines on his Sonoma County property in 1978, while still running a group of car dealerships in the county — a passion project from a lifelong wine lover with land in the right place: the southern end of the Russian River Valley, near the Sebastopol Hills.
His son Stephen planted additional acreage through the late 1980s, and in 1996 — the same year Walter passed away — Stephen founded Walter Hansel Winery and released the first commercial vintage: 350 cases of Chardonnay and 70 cases of Pinot Noir.
Today the estate farms more than 75 acres under a Burgundian approach — minimal intervention, sustainable farming, small-lot production — bottled under five vineyard designates: Cahill Lane, Cuvée Alyce, North Slope, The Meadows, and the flagship Estate label.
